Commemorative china in this portrait quality is not something you see often outside a glass cabinet.

A transfer-printed porcelain mug by Norfolk China of Norwich, England, commemorating Grace Horsley Darling the lighthouse keepers daughter who rowed through a storm to rescue survivors of the SS Forfarshire in 1838, and became one of Victorian Englands best-known heroines.

The mug carries a full-colour transfer portrait of Darling at the oars, set in a rope-edged oval frame, with her name and dates 1815 1842 in script below. Gold-tone rim. Marked on the base with the Norfolk China crown trademark.

Works on a shelf or dresser display alongside other commemorative or transfer-print pieces. The portrait holds detail up close, so it reads better with space around it than packed into a crowded vignette. Functional as a mug; given the condition, more likely to earn a permanent shelf spot.
