Stratton made some of the best powder compacts in Britain, and this butterfly scene lid is among the more decorative examples I've come across.
A mid-century round compact in gold-tone metal, the lid set with a cream enamel panel painted with three butterflies among thistles and green foliage. The reverse carries Stratton's engine-turned chevron pattern. Inside: the original mirror and the original powder puffer, still marked "Stratton / Made in England" on the fabric. Original face powder remains in the puffer.
The hinge and clasp are both functioning. Some light surface scuffing to the gold-tone back, consistent with use. Mirror shows minor age spotting.
Sits well on a dressing table as a display piece as much as a functional compact. The butterfly panel reads as a small artwork at this scale. Works with other mid-century vanity objects — perfume bottles, trinket dishes, powder jars — or alone on a small tray.
