Vintage 1950s Black Gold Embroidered Peacock Bird Clutch Wristlet Evening Bag

Zardozi-style goldwork embroidery this dense and intact is not common on a bag that has survived in usable condition.

A mid-century wristlet clutch in black fabric with an all-over pattern of raised gold metallic thread embroidery — flowers, leaves, and scrolling vines covering every surface of the front. The centrepiece is a 3D peacock, its tail fanned out in layered gold thread and its neck and breast worked in deep blue silk. The reverse is plain black. Inside, a black-lined interior holds a small rectangular mirror in a gold-tone frame, tucked into an inner pocket.

The 28 cm braided black wrist strap keeps it close at hand. It sits well held in the crook of an arm for an evening out, or carried loose for a dressed-up daytime event.
