Toledo damasquinado earrings on their original card are increasingly hard to find intact.

A pair of clip-on earrings from Olias del Rey, near Toledo, Spain. The technique — damasquinado — involves hand-inlaying fine gold wire into a blackened steel surface, then burnishing the design flat. The card reads "con ORO de 24 Kis" (with 24-karat gold) and names Olias del Rey, one of the main centres of this craft in the Toledo region.

The motif is a hummingbird or dove in flight among flowers and foliage, worked in two tones of gold against the matte black ground. The surrounding frame is set with small gold-tone petal shapes. The design is hand-worked — no two pieces are exactly alike.

The scale is compact at 1.2 × 1.2 cm, which keeps them versatile — they sit close to the ear and work as well with a tailored collar as with a loose linen shirt. The clip mechanism is low-profile and comfortable for extended wear. A good choice for anyone who prefers clip-ons that don't announce themselves.
