Marcasite and silver-tone filigree — one of the most recognisable combinations in mid-century costume jewellery, and still one of the hardest to replicate convincingly.
A vintage floral brooch in silver-tone metal with marcasite stones set into the design — small faceted pyrite-like stones that catch light with a dark, steely sparkle. The frame is built around an openwork floral and scroll lattice, with marcasites accenting the flower centres and detail points. Non-magnetic, consistent with a base metal alloy. No maker's marks.
Marcasite pieces like this were produced across Western and Eastern Europe throughout the mid-20th century, with the filigree-and-marcasite combination at its most popular in the 1960s–1980s. The style reads timeless rather than dated — it sits comfortably alongside both period outfits and modern wardrobes.
Pins well to a collar, lapel, or the front of a cardigan. The dark sparkle of marcasite sits differently from rhinestones — more understated, more considered.
